The Royal Oak was the first luxury watch in steel to cost more than a gold dress watch, a gamble that saved Audemars Piguet.

Reference 15500 grew the case to 41 mm, enlarged the Grande Tapisserie squares and moved the seconds track outward for a cleaner dial.
